Dear Parishioners,
This letter contains a sense of urgency because our financial situation at St. Michael’s continues to worsen. To that end, the Finance Committee and I have begun working with a special company that has helped other parishes in our Diocese with similar financial problems. You will be hearing more from me personally in the pulpit as well as in the bulletin in the days to come. I am grateful to the Cunneen Company for coming to our assistance at St. Michael’s.
Many of you may think that St. Michael’s is fine financially, we always seem to pay our bills, we seem to be able to fix things that need to be attended to, we are able to provide necessary ministry to our people and to the neighborhood. But what we don’t often realize is that there isn’t enough money from the weekly collections to cover all the financial needs of the parish. We have for months now published in the bulletin that we need $5,000 weekly to cover our expenses – salaries, utilities, items for ministry, etc. We never reach $5,000! In fact, we average around $1,500 per week! You may ask… how have we survived? The simply fact is that we have borrowed extensively from savings such that we are now below $5,000 in savings. We have some savings invested in stocks and bonds, but even that amount of money has fallen drastically in these tough economic times. In addition, we have had very generous benefactors who have made some significant donations to St. Michael’s. You, yourselves, have helped as well with the various fundraising activities at St. Michaels – the Barrio Festival, the Puerto Rican Festival, the Eastman Concert Series at St. Michael’s…to name just a few.
We must do more, however, on a weekly basis. I urge you, with all my heart, to consider what you are currently giving to St. Michael’s. Can’t you, won’t you, please consider giving more? The simply mathematical equation says that if every family gives $10 more each week, we’d be debt free and be able to take care of our bills more easily. I’m painfully aware that $10 more a week is simply impossible for many of you… but won’t you please consider giving more than what you currently give? Perhaps we can work towards an average increase of $10 per week per family, which will solve our financial problems.
The Cunneen Company will be helping us with this Stewardship Appeal later this month and into October. You will hear from some parishioners about how they are responding to our financial need. You will hear even more from me. You will also be receiving several mailings from Cunneen and our efforts will culminate with a Commitment Sunday.
Together we can do many great things… as individuals we will always fail. Please take this letter very seriously and pray about how you can help St. Michael’s. The fact of the matter is simply this: We must solve these financial woes or St. Michael’s will, in fact, have no other recourse other than to close its doors. This Church is too important to all of us… so all of us must solve this situation together.
Please join in this effort to save St. Michael’s… and may the Lord bless you greatly for your generous response to this request from me.

Esta carta contiene un sentido de urgencia, porque nuestra situación financiera en San Miguel sigue empeorando. Por eso, el Comité de Finanzas y yo hemos comenzado a trabajar con una compañía especial que ha ayudado a otras parroquias en nuestra Diócesis con similares problemas financieros. Ustedes escucharán más de mí personalmente en el púlpito, así como en el boletín en los próximos días. Estoy agradecido a la Compañía Cunneen por venir en nuestra ayuda en San Miguel.
Muchos de ustedes pueden pensar que San Miguel está bien económicamente, siempre nos parece que podemos pagar nuestras cuentas, parece que somos capaces de arreglar las cosas que necesitan atención, somos capaces de proveer un ministerio necesario para nuestro pueblo y para el barrio. Pero lo que a menudo no se dan cuenta es que no hay dinero suficiente de las colecciones semanales para cubrir todas las necesidades financieras de la parroquia. Tenemos desde hace meses publicado en el boletín que necesitamos $5,000 semanales para cubrir nuestros gastos – los sueldos, servicios públicos, artículos para el ministerio, etc. ¡Nunca llegan a $5,000! De hecho, ¡tenemos una cantidad de alrededor de $1,500 por semana! ¿Cómo hemos sobrevivido, ustedes pueden decir? El hecho es simplemente que hemos tomado ampliamente de ese ahorro que ahora estamos por debajo de $5,000 en el ahorro. Tenemos algunos ahorros invertidos en acciones y bonos, pero incluso esa cantidad de dinero se ha reducido drásticamente en estos difíciles tiempos económicos. Además, hemos tenido muy generosos benefactores que han hecho algunas importantes donaciones a San Miguel. Ustedes mismos, han contribuido también con las actividades de recaudación de fondos en San Miguel – el Festival de Barrio, el Festival Puertorriqueño, la Serie de Conciertos de Eastman en San Miguel… por nombrar sólo algunos.
Sin embargo, debemos hacer más sobre una base semanal. Les pido, con todo mi corazón, que examinen lo que están dando a San Miguel. ¿No puede usted, por favor, consideran la posibilidad de dar más? La ecuación matemática, simplemente dice que si cada familia le da $10 más cada semana, nos libra de deudas y será capaz de cuidar de nuestras cuentas con más facilidad. Soy dolorosamente consciente de que $10 más a la semana es simplemente imposible para muchos de ustedes… ¿pero, si por favor pueden considerar dar más de lo que actualmente dan? Tal vez podamos trabajar en pro de un aumento promedio de $10 por semana por familia, que va a resolver nuestros problemas financieros.
La Compañía Cunneen nos ayudará con el presente recurso de Administración a finales de este mes y en octubre. Usted escuchará de algunos feligreses sobre cómo están respondiendo a nuestras necesidades financieras. Usted escuchará mucho más de mí. También se reciben varias cartas de Cunneen y nuestros esfuerzos culminarán con un domingo de compromiso.
Como individuales podemos fallar, ¡pero juntos podemos lograr grandes cosas! Por favor, tenga muy en serio esta carta y oren acerca de cómo ustedes pueden ayudar a San Miguel. El hecho de la cuestión es simplemente esto: ¡Tenemos que resolver estos problemas financieros o San Miguel, de hecho, va a cerrar las puertas! Esta Iglesia es demasiado importante para todos nosotros… así que todos nosotros debemos resolver esta situación juntos.
Por favor únanse a mí en este esfuerzo para salvar a San Miguel… y que el Señor les bendiga grandemente por su generosa respuesta a esta solicitud de mi parte.
